Legislators in 7 States Want a Bill That Lets You Sue Corrupt Politicians and Lets Your State Charge Them With Felonies

Kentucky's version is finished, and six more states are next

Kentucky now has its own version of the Make Corrupt Politicians Pay Act, the legislation that makes it a felony for any public official to trade stocks on information from office before the public knows it and empowers the victims on the other side of those trades to sue the official personally. Legislators in seven states have shown active interest in the Act so far, and Kentucky’s representatives showed enough interest that we wrote their version first. The 24-page Kentucky version is now finished.

You can read the full Kentucky version by clicking this sentence.

The versions for the other six states come next:

  • New Hampshire

  • New York

  • Florida

  • Hawaii

  • Texas

  • North Carolina

Want to understand how this legislation works? Consider this: if the director of the FBI got a DUI in Lexington while on duty, the Lexington Police Department would arrest him, right? And nobody would feel the need to ask whether the crime was a federal matter or whether it should be referred to the Justice Department. Well there is zero reason insider trading and other corrupt practices need to be any different. The Act covers anyone who influences and profits unlawfully off their position, with no exemptions, and the case is prosecuted in the victims jurisdiction.

Writing these is expensive work. Each version is rewritten to that state’s code, with every citation checked against the statute books and the state constitution, as well as existing case law. That’s because a law that lets people sue public officials will inevitably draw well funded lawsuits from the industry groups that lobby for those officials, as well as powerful opposition from the most corrupt and powerful parties in our government, and even draw the ire of those who exploit these vulnerabilities in our political system to buy politicians.

Our volunteers are still actively calling, emailing, mailing printed packets and setting up meetings with the offices that responded.

Can you pitch in on Buy Me a Coffee to help us keep going on this? What’s it worth to you to have every state pushing this legislation? One coffee helps, and a monthly coffee keeps the volunteers and the drafting going for as long as this campaign lasts, which we expect to be an multi-year process.

Don’t let this be the reason you miss a meal or are late on rent.

Every update from here will tell you which state versions are finished and when reps begin bringing the legislation for a vote in their respective legislature. We are going to keep getting after it, regardless of whether you can contribute. Can you join the call to action below to help send this legislation to your reps?
