A Message For You. And The Grinch.

The original idea was lighthearted. The Grinch as a modern trickster deity, what his popularity says about us, that kind of thing. Maybe I’ll write that one next year.

Then I decided to write an article about how the Grinch is now far more popular than Santa, from streaming services to wrapping paper to home decorations. It was nearly done when I deleted it.

I deleted it because the conclusion was about everyone singing, holding hands, eating together as a community. I wanted it to be true but that doesn’t scale.

I really explored this conflict within me because a part of me does truly believe that kindness and love can be curative. I know this is true. There’s substantial empirical research showing that pro-social behavior improves when we integrate with others.

But also I think the world would be a better place if we could put all the fascists in a rocket ship and send them into space. Maybe just their leadership? The oligarchs who run the media’s 24/7 version of Orwell’s two minutes of hate.

Where am I in all of this?

I’m not posting the article because I’m still conflicted. These things are true and counter one another. Conflicting and both true.

Shaming behavior as a community is effective. The paradox of tolerance comes into play. We need to make it clear what behavior is acceptable and what won’t be tolerated. And hate won’t be tolerated.

I don’t have an answer to any of that.

Maybe the lesson of the Grinch isn’t about society. Maybe it’s simpler. Don’t stay in your cave too long being bitter at everyone. Go out. Bring something. The community is there if you show up for it.

It’s Christmas. Our loved ones and community are the real world. Pragmatically, that’s our reality, the realest reality for us due to proximity. Touch grass, make food for friends, go foraging with family, whatever you’re into.

Thank you all so much for this year together. I have found a community that doesn't just wish the world was a better place, but is actually ready to make it one. That has restored my hope for our future. You all did that, and we can all keep making a difference, together. Truly, thank you for being here and being you.

With love,

Chris
